“Well-meaning adults can easily destroy a child’s love of reading: stop them reading what they enjoy, or give them worthy-but-dull books that you like, the 21st-century equivalents of Victorian “improving” literature. You’ll wind up with a generation convinced that reading is uncool and worse, unpleasant.”—
Neil Gaiman, “Why our future depends on libraries, reading, and daydreaming”
This is wonderful.
It aggravates me when people say they don’t like to read… You do like to read you just haven’t found the right book yet… and an army of teachers and adults failed you a little bit by not introducing you to the right type of literature.
Isn’t it odd how much fatter a book gets when you’ve read it several times? As if something were left between the pages every time you read it. Feelings, thoughts, sounds, smells, and then, when you look at the book again many years later, you find yourself there, too, a slightly younger self, slightly different, as if the book had preserved you like a pressed flower, both strange and familiar.
I really hate that watching TV is associated with being lazy and boring while reading books is associated with being smart and profound. Both are really fucking great ways of telling stories and if you find a story that moves you, whether it’s a 900 page novel, a tv show, a film, a comic, or a sentence engraved on a slice of bread IT IS WORTHY OF YOUR TIME!!
Most of this is actually terrifying. I’m slowly starting to realize that no one reads anymore.This is honestlythe most horrifying thing I have read in the recent past. I feel genuinely awful for those books that are not finished ;-;
the statistics about not reading after school and not going into book stores are horrifying. ive read more after school than i did in school and I go to a book store on a regular basis…
This is sad. GO READ A BOOK ‘Merica!
i literally have NO friends who read books for fun
